Positive Trait: Intellect – Matthew is an extremely intelligent vampire and well respected in the mortal scientific community among humans who do not realize what he is. In fact, he has lived many lives under many different names, disappearing for years at a time to give the illusion of being different individuals instead of one long-lived individual. He is most at home being a scientist and a healer. He met the son he is closest to on the Civil War battleground as a medic from France working directly under Lafayette. At present, he is a well-known geneticist known for working with wolf populations. This research is intended to help cure his own terrible genetic affliction – blood rage, a combination of possessiveness, blinding anger, and an insatiable thirst for blood.
Negative Trait: Feral – Matthew’s blood rage and even his vampirism gives him many of the traits of a wild and dangerous animal. He is a possessive and protective lover. He loves the chase more than anything, in love and even just in the hunt. When he chooses to hunt, he spots a deer or elk in a sparsely populated area and will hunt it down, sometimes on horseback. Later in the books, when he is deeply in love and another vampire threatens his wife, his anger is nearly blinding. She has to talk reason into him.
Negative Trait: Cold – Matthew can seem cold upon the first approach. Over the years, he has forced himself to become that way. Centuries ago, he used to be a passionate poet, kind and sweet, but he’s been through a lot, including the death of his wife and son from his mortal years. He’s been pigeonholed as a spy and assassin over and over because he is a good hunter and a good protector, and it’s become tiring being seen only for his brawn and skills in battle instead of for his keen mind. He’s become what he believes his father always wanted him to be – a soldier.
Negative Trait: Laser Focused – When Matthew wants something, it’s hard for him to see the big picture. Lately, he’s been looking for a specific book that he believes holds the secrets to preventing vampires from dying out as a species. In his search for the book, he’s missed out on other things, like the reappearance of a child from long ago, also afflicted with blood rage, who has been terrorizing London. If he would open his eyes, he might be able to help so many people near and dear to him, but he’s a man on a mission, and nothing will stop him.
Powers and Abilities: Vampires are physically stronger and faster than humans. They usually become very beautiful upon being turned. Their bodies are very efficient – they run cold and they don’t need to eat frequently. Their hearts beat slowly and they don’t need much sleep. Their blood can be used as a sedative and can be addictive to mortals. Some vampires give their blood to mortals as a way to control them. There are only a few surefire ways to kill a vampire – destroying their heart, beheading, and complete exsanguination.
